The Coming of Age of Cassandra Mooney

Chapter 4 - One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

Cassie awoke the next morning the same as every other morning. After her alarm went off, she laid quietly in bed thinking about the upcoming day. It was Friday, her favorite day of the week, and she eagerly anticipated tomorrows trip to the Mall. It took her a few minutes to notice something different, something significant. She had not wet the bed. Her sheets, her underwear, and her nightshirt were completely dry.

"It's over," she thought to herself.

Her mood was instantly joyful. She practically skipped to the bathroom to shower and get ready for school. It seemed to be over. She had not wet the bed. She was back to normal! She sang happily to herself as she did her hair. It wasn't until her sister banged loudly on the bathroom door that she realized that her good mood, in particular her loud singing, might not be appreciated by everyone in the house at 6:45 in the morning. She didn't care. She was happy, and she was not going to bottle it up inside! Cassie went into the living-room just in time to catch her mother walking out the door.

"How was your night, sweetheart?" asked Helen.

"Good" answered Cassie cheerfully. Helen understood what that meant, and left for work relieved that her daughter was in a good mood again.

When Cassie went to the kitchen to make breakfast, she found Cheryl sitting at the kitchen table. While Cassie poured her cereal, she talked.

"I'm sorry I woke you up this morning, sis. You want me to make you something to eat?"

"I take it you didn't wet the bed this morning?" Cassie was a bit taken aback by the question. Cheryl had not said it in a degrading tone, but had said it as though she were aggravated, or disappointed. It didn't matter though, Cassie was still in a good mood and she answered song-fully, "No, I didn't. You hungry?" Though Cheryl was not looking directly at Cassie, Cassie thought she saw a faint smile cross Cheryl's lips. Not just any smile, but a happy smile. Cassie had not seen her sister crack a happy smile in months.

"Yeah. I could eat something" Cassie decided to make some eggs to go with their cereal, and happily cooked her and her sister a meal.

After they ate, both had to leave for school. Cassie knew that Cheryl hated riding the bus, so she offered her sister a rare treat: a ride to school.

"Maybe it will get her to smile more," thought Cassie.

The ride to school was uneventful, and Cassie soon found herself with her friends in the hallways before class.

"Are you ready for the shopping tomorrow?" asked Melanie.

"The sales are really going to be good. Fifty Percent off at the shoe store! Can you believe it?" Cassie was excited about the trip. The past few weekends she and her friends had had some amazing adventures, and an all-day shopping trip seemed to her a perfect next step. She wondered what Brian and Seth would do at the mall while the girls were trying on clothes.

Before classes started, Kelly and Cassie found themselves alone for a moment.

"How are things?" Kelly asked.

"You mean that thing we talked about yesterday?" asked Cassie. Kelly nodded.

"Seems to have cleared up."

"You are definitely in a better mood today. That's for sure" Cassie nodded in agreement and bound off to her next class. Kelly watched her go. Cassie's almost child-like giddiness proved to be infectious as Kelly cracked a wide smile. She was very happy for her friend.

Cassie's first class, Chemistry, went very well.

Cassie was attentive, asked lots of question, and was even allowed by the teacher to work with some of the chemicals again. After class, Cassie approached her teacher.

"I'm sorry for my behavior the past few days in class. I was just dealing with some personal issues, but I'm better now!"

"Thanks, Cassie," the teacher said, obviously touched that a student had taken the time to apologize.

Cassie's apology resulted in Cassie being late to Algebra, and she received a tardy slip. Still in a good mood, however, she answered several math questions on the board in front of the class. What was odd, though, was that her leg kept falling asleep. Not her entire leg, just the inside of her left thigh. She could feel it tingling as it slowly went numb. She went back to her seat and touched her thigh. I seemed to have lost all feeling. She even poked herself with her pencil, and still did not feel a thing. It was while she was trying to wake up her thigh the she felt a new sensation. She froze in horror. The sensation was wetness, and it was spreading. It was spreading quickly. She looked down and saw the damp patch spreading in her crotch as she realized that she was peeing in her pants. She looked around at her classmates. No-one seemed to have noticed what was going on, and she hoped it would stay that way. She clenched down with all of her might to try to stop herself from peeing even more, but to no avail. Her body completely emptied the contents of her bladder into her pants, and into the chair of her desk. She did not know what to do. The urine had pooled up into a puddle on the chair between her legs, and was beginning to drip onto the floor. To her relief, the bell rang, and most of the class got up and left.

She slowly came to her senses and realized that she had a jacket stuffed in the bottom of her back-pack.

She dumped the backpack out on the desk and retrieved the jacket, the math teacher's attention suddenly grabbed by the sound of the falling books.

"Don't look up," thought Cassie, "just wrap the jacket around yourself and get out of here." The teacher didn't even have time to ask. Cassie had the jacket wrapped around her self and walked quickly out of the room. She didn't even bother to pick up her books. Where was she going? If she went to the nurse's office, she would have to admit, probably in front of other students, that she had wet her pants. If she went to her next class, she would be seen by the other girls in the locker room as she changed. Cassie made a quick decision to go to her car. She knew if she got caught, she would be in a lot of trouble, but what other choice did she have? She had wet her pants, and did not want the school finding out about it. She ran outside into the parking lot. To her surprise, no-one stopped her. No-one even seemed to notice her. She climbed into her car and sat down, all the more aware of the wetness between her legs.

What had just happened in there? She didn't even know she had to go to the bathroom. She had had no warning.

She couldn't even remember feeling the normal sensations she would get while going to the bathroom.

The only indicator she had wet at all was that she felt wetness on the back of her legs.

Cassie sat for a long time contemplating what had occurred in math class. It occurred to her that leaving her books behind was a bad idea. Her books had her name in them, serving only to label the puddle of pee in Mr. Thompson's room. She also realized that getting Mr. Thompson's attention was probably not wise, either, for now he almost certainly knew what had happened. Cassie began to feel overwhelmed. She started to cry, and decided it would probably be best now to just go home.

The trip seemed to take forever. She didn't realize how hard it would be to drive when she was so upset.

After several almost missed stop signs, a couple of swerves to avoid oncoming traffic, and a harsh stop to prevent the death of a hapless squirrel, she finally made it home.

She clambered through the front door of her house.

"Honey?" Cassie screamed. She also felt the unmistakable feeling of new wetness between her legs. She turned to see her mother, home from work early, and obviously concerned.

"Honey? What happened?" Helen came forward and took her daughter into her arms.

"I.I." Cassie stammered for the words to say "I wet my pants. In class. In front of everyone!" Cassie sobbed loudly into her mothers embrace.

"Oh! Oh dear. Are you ok? Is there anything I can do?" Helen was mortified. The last time she had seen Cassie, Cassie had been in an exceptionally good mood.

Now her daughter was breaking down in her arms, and she felt helpless.

"I didn't know what to do. I didn't even know it was happening until it was too late." Helen held her daughter, wordlessly for a few more minutes. The telephone began to ring, and Helen reluctantly let go of her daughter. While Helen was on the phone, Cassie just stood there. She was confused and very upset. She had no idea what was happening to herself. She became aware that the feeling still had not come back on a small section of her inner thigh.

Were the two related? She had noticed the numbness just before she had wet herself.

Helen returned to her daughter.

"That was Mr.

Thompson. He wanted to make sure you were all right.

He also wanted to tell you that he has your books when you are ready to pick them up, and not to worry.

No-one will know what happened." Cassie suddenly realized that Mr. Thompson must have realized what had happened and gotten it cleaned up before the next class arrived. She suddenly felt a wave of gratitude towards her math teacher, and nearly began to cry again. She had wet her pants in class, but thanks to her math teacher, no-one would know.

Cassie went to the bathroom to clean up. She stripped off her wet jeans and panties, and climbed into the shower. The warm water felt good to her body, and she began to lighten up a little. She still had a small patch of skin on her inner thigh which had no feeling.

Cassie realized she should probably see a doctor.

When Cassie got out of the shower, she was surprised to find her brother was home. Helen and Blake broke off their conversation when Cassie entered the room.

"Hey sis. Are you ok?" asked Blake with genuine concern reflected on his face.

"I'm fine. What are you doing home?"

"One of your friends. Kelly I think. told me that you hadn't shown up for Gym class. I got coach's permission to come home early to check on you. Mom told me what happened." To Cassie's astonishment, she didn't mind that her brother knew she had wet her pants. The look on his face put her mind at ease. He was sympathetic. He wasn't going to tell anyone.

"I think I need to go see a doctor."

"The doctor's office has already closed today." Helen had called for a doctor while Cassie had been in the shower.

"The doctor on call told me to take you to the emergency room."

"Mom, I don't think I need to go to the emergency room. Can we just make an appointment for tomorrow?" Cassie noticed that the feeling had begun to come back in her leg. Cassie took this as a good sign.

"Maybe this was just a one time thing," Cassie thought.

"Are you sure you're all right, sweetheart?"

"I think so. I don't think its anything to go to the emergency room over. I'm feeling better, really!" Helen was skeptical. But Helen also knew the excessive high prices of emergency room care. Helen resigned to keep a careful eye on her daughter, and if nothing more happened, they would wait until tomorrow to see a doctor.

"Maybe I can still go to the mall tomorrow, before the doctor's visit."

"Sis, that may not be a good idea. What happens if you wet yourself again?" asked Blake "I'll just keep going to the bathroom a lot. I can't wet myself if my bladder is always empty. One of my friends said that this kind of thing can be caused by stress. I think that the mall would be a good stress reliever!" Helen and Blake looked at each other. Both thought that this was a bad idea, but both knew how much Cassie had been looking forward to this trip.

Helen finally gave in.

"Ok, but you be home by 2pm sharp to go to the doctor." A thud of a door shutting in the back hallway made everyone jump. No-one had notice that Cheryl had come home during the conversation. And no-one had noticed her standing on the threshold of the living-room, listening to the conversation. Cassie went to Cheryl's door and knocked. The door cracked open.

"Hey sis, I didn't hear you come home."

"I noticed," came Cheryl's sharp reply.

"I heard you guys talking. Are you going to be ok?"

"Yeah, I think so. I'll see a doctor tomorrow about it." Cassie had a sudden thought.

"Hey Cheryl, please don't tell anyone about what's been going on with me."

"Don't worry about it," She said and closed the door.

The answer was simple and straight forward, but the look on Cheryl's face had spoken volumes to Cassie. It was a look of embarrassment, of hurt. Cheryl was hurt that Cassie thought she might tell. Cheryl might be abrupt and mean, but Cassie suddenly realized that Cheryl was just as concerned about her as the rest of the family.
